It is mainly used as an additive for gasoline, possessing excellent anti-knock properties, increasing the octane number. It can also be cracked to produce isobutylene. It has good compatibility with gasoline, low water absorption, and no environmental pollution. It can improve as an analytical solvent and extractant. In chromatography, especially in high-pressure liquid chromatography, it is used as a desorber. It forms azeotropes with some polar solvents such as water, methanol, and ethanol. Methyl tert-butyl ether also has a mild anesthetic effect.
